Six Items or Less

Have any of you seen the Six Items or Less challenge?  Better yet, have any of you been crazy brave enough to take on the challenge?  Basically, you pick six items from your wardrobe and wear only those six items for a month.  Just to be clear, underwear and socks don't count, so please change those daily, ok? Thanks.  Also, don't worry about taking up precious spots with jackets, shoes, or accessories.  Those are freebies, too.  So you might choose a dress, a pair of jeans, sweat pants, two t-shirts, and a sweatshirt.  Or something like that.  I can't imagine pulling this off back when I was working outside the house, but really, I think this is doable for me.  Maybe.

Here's the thing.  It's got me thinking.  Really, I was already thinking about purging and scaling back in the closet, especially since I either don't fit in or don't wear much of the stuff in there anymore.  I met someone once who told me she found a shirt pattern she liked, so at the beginning of the summer she made three shirts from that one pattern and that's all she wore.  Super simple.  I loved the sound of that.  And I'm such a t-shirt and comfy pants kind of girl anyway.  I could really scale back.  Now, between the kids and all the baking/cooking I can't get away with wearing items multiple days between washing.  That's just not going to happen anymore.  But I'm thinking I can really simplify around here.  Maybe a couple of outfits for at-home days, couple for errand/visiting days, and a couple of dressy outfits.  You know, just in case I leave the house without a child attached to me.  I have tons of old t-shirts crowding the closet.  Really, I could probably go a month and not wear the same shirt twice.  And I don't shop.  Really, I don't.  I've just acquired them all over the years, and most of them I don't even like because they don't fit well anymore.  Or they never did in the first place.  So why do I still have them?  Who knows.

So, maybe I can change this challenge so it's more of a lifestyle change.  You know, less of a diet and more of a healthy dressing plan.  So instead of six items or less, I should change it to six outfits or less.

That's it.  I'm convinced.
I'm going through my closet this weekend.
Who's with me?

  1. Hmm. I sort of do this already. I rotate amongst jeans, the same size/style/brand, but I have one to wear while the other's waiting to be washed. (I have an extra right now, because there was an online sale and I know I'm going to go through the knee of one pair really soon.) This time of year I basically wear thermals every day, two per day. (YES, two. It's freaking cold up here.) I think I have six of them. I usually end up topping with a wool sweater, because I'm still cold. You know, I don't think I could really do only six items because I'd get too cold. Did this idea originate south of the Mason/Dixon line, where you don't have to layer as much? ;)

  2. I wear the same things over and over because I never shop for clothes. I'd like to come up with a nice professional wardrobe - simple, mix and match stuff that looks good but doesn't take up the whole closet.

Amy, I'm from down south and they don't even sell thermals down here. I've never worn thermal underlayers in my whole life. :)

  3. I don't think thermals count. Just visible layers. I would count that as undergarments. And yeah, it's really hard to find thermals down here. I wore some leggings under a pair of jeans once when I had to ride on the back of a motorcycle on New Year's Day in Long Island.
    Never.
    Again.

I'm pretty good with jeans and pants. It's the ugly t-shirts that have taken over throughout the decades.

  4. I think my entire wardrobe consists of less than six items (that fit). I'm on the bottom of the clothing food chain in my household. Next to four kids and a working husband, stay-at-home momma takes last place. So, yeah, I think I could do it. :)

btw, loving the background. It's so happy.

  5. I'm on the bottom too, Delia. Which is why I don't get rid of clothes that don't fit . . . who knows when I'll get something new that does! My closet's filled with ugly, ill-fitted t-shirts from college . . . maybe even high school. Maybe we need a Clothes for Mama movement instead of the 6 items or less thing! :)

Thanks, by the way. I'm loving the happy background too!

  6. Wow, this sounds fun. I wear about 1/3 of my wardrobe more than once in a week, so it sounds like a good way to get creative with clothing.

  7. GREAT idea! I just stumbled on your blog and it just so happens that I purged my closet yesterday and even more today - two trips to Goodwill in two days. Feels gooood, and while I don't know that I could do the six items challenge, I definitely need to scale back the urge to fill up my closet with NEW items that I don't truly NEED. Good post!
